The Global Sanctions Data Base: Mapping international sanction policies from 1950-2019

The Global Sanctions Data Base (GSDB) is a comprehensive resource that maps international sanctions policies from 1950 to 2019. The database is maintained by the Peterson Institute for International Economics and is used by policymakers, scholars, and analysts to analyze trends in international sanctions policy and their impact on global trade and finance. This paper focuses on additional cases that were imposed up to 2016. While the 1990s and 2000s saw a peak in global economic integration, more recent years have seen the rise of interstate political disputes, political polarisation, and a heavy reliance on coercive sanctions meant to restrict the free flow of capital, capital assets, and people across borders. This paper contains findings from the recently revised Global Sanctions Data Bank, which now covers sanction cases from 1950 to 2019 more thoroughly and includes the years of the Trump presidency.
