National Food Security Plan and Role of Food Diplomacy : What India Should Do

In a country where per capita income is lower than the world average, and where 30% of the population lives below the poverty line, food inflation is and will remain always the biggest political issue in every election. The management of food inflation will be the cornerstone for good governance claims by any ruling party. Agriculture reforms will take time. On one side it is state subject on the other technology penetration in agriculture takes its own time due to various socio-economic, agro-climatic and political reasons. If case we want economic success in India, agriculture sector needs due attention in India. Long term consistent policy to ensure suitable food security is vital. The National Food Security Plan will act as a blue print for all and will also encourage private investment. This document should include needs for food, feed, fiber and fuel and also agriculture based inputs for other industrial sectors. This will give clear direction to all stakeholders at least for the next 10 years, which can be evaluated on a yearly basis.
